Zlata Filipovic wrote her diary between September 1991 and October 1993. Following its publication, she was awarded the Special Child of Courage Award by the Simon Wiesenthal Center. She and her family left Sarajevo in December of 1993, and used the proceeds from the book to launch a charity for child victims of the Bosnian war.

This is the diary of a girl named Zlata. In the early 1990s when Zlata was 11 years old and enjoying a typical young girl's life, a war was starting. It slowly trickled to where she lived in Bosnia causing World War II like conditions for the country. Quickly electricity became scarce and then non-existent. Water, gas, and food became things to ration carefully. Winter came and Zlata's family had to start to burn furniture just to keep warm.Zlata had started her diary shortly before the war broke out, and for 2 years she kept almost a daily account of what was happening around her. Through the eyes of a young girl, we learn what war was like for children. And at the age of 13, when she finally escaped to Paris with her family and she was free from Bosnia's war, the relief she felt was expressed at the end of her diary.This was a quick read, and an interesting perspective of the war. Like Anne Frank's diary (except with much less detail), we get to hear what it was like for a child. I have two 12 year old children myself, and I can imagine them writing the exact same way if they kept a diary. IT is innocent and focuses on what children miss the most and how very little understand they have of grown up problems.It is a good read. I encourage you to try it for yourself.
I bought this book for my daughter and wound up reading it myself, too. Powerfully written in the naive and immature way of a child, but with the principle and conviction of someone much older. Indeed Zlata was wise beyond her years and the unwitting author of a book that every child of the 2010s should read.
Zlata's book is impressive for a child, so impressive that several British journalists soon discovered that entire sections of the original manuscript had been drastically altered - by the Sarajevo regime. The result is that a mere child touts the Bosnian government political party line for the world. At the time, the Bosnian government was working overtime to get world sympathy and to create the image of them as "victims". The end result was to lure the West via NATO into becoming the Bosnian Muslim's airforce and to help in defeating the Serb minority of Bosnia. It worked. Zlata's book makes for interesting reading. Her suffering is real. But the book was used for propaganda purposes and was not entirely written by her. Shame. Young readers should be aware of this and to learn to question anything - especially when it's being spoon-fed to them.
